You can play without a wheel

Xbox controllers are plug-and-play. A PS4 / PS5 controller needs DS4Windows to present it as an Xbox pad (covered back in level 01). A keyboard works in a pinch too.

On a pad, do install a steering assist — stock gamepad steering is hard work in a lot of cars. See Advanced Gamepad Assist and A7 Assist in Recommended mods.

Wheel basics

  1. Install the vendor firmware / driver first. Search for brand model wheel firmware (e.g. “Moza R12 wheel firmware”) and set your steering angle there.
  2. In Content Manager → Settings → Controls, select your wheel and assign throttle / brake / clutch / shifting.
  3. Calibrate steering to full lock, and check that force feedback (FFB) direction is correct and not clipping (overloaded).

Logitech users: G HUB must stay open the whole time you play — closing it drops force feedback.

Also remap every button in CM after any firmware update — updates routinely wipe the mapping.

Force feedback feel

  • If FFB is too heavy or clipping, lower the overall gain; if it feels “muddy”, add a little detail.
  • FFB varies a lot between cars — fine-tune around the car you drive most.
